Step into the shoes of your ideal client and critique these designs based on their wants, needs, and preferences. Don’t shy away from being honest and transparent in your critique. We want to know what you like and dislike. Here are few things to keep in mind:

  • The logo should represent your business values BUT resonate & connect with your ideal client
  • We are rarely our own “ideal client” so put your customers’ preferences first and your preferences second

  1. Overall very happy with this design! I think you did a great job of separating and highlighting my portrait and wedding work. I think everything flows very well and it’s very user friendly.

As a side note, I can’t tell you how much I’m loving the merlot color!

Below are a few of my questions/concerns:

    1. I mentioned that I wanted to incorporate my reviews and published work. I realize I forgot to upload my badges on my pass galleries, so I will go ahead and add those to my wedding PASS album as soon as I finish this comment. Here is a link to the page on my current site that includes my reviews and badges: http://www.emilybphoto.net/kind-words/

    2. I have a MailChimp newsletter. Can we add a sign up button or pop-up to my new website? Here is the signup link: http://emilybphoto.us1.list-manage2.com/subscribe?u=08230b02c37184d83438d4852&id=9d84929b31

    3. From the main menu, when you click on “Weddings” or “Portraits,” the title at the top of each page (“Featured Wedding” and “Featured Portrait Session”) leaves a little to be desired. Maybe it’s the choice of font and/or the white background/framing around the title.

    4. A few of the photos on the main landing page are very blurry due to the sizing. Would it hurt my site speed too much if I were to upload a larger file size for those that appear overly blurry?

    5. On the contact pages, I like the idea of incorporating a photo above the form. Is that something we can play around with? The way they appear now just seems like there’s a little something missing from the title.

Thank you so much, and I can’t wait to see more!

  2. Oh, one other thing I wanted to mention. I don’t know if I love the font for the page titles on the menu of the mock-up page. I like the font on the preview image above more – it has the little “caps” on the ends of the letters. Does that make sense?

  3. Sorry, I didn’t explain well from the beginning. Usually, in this phase I only provide the mockup graphic and not a URL site. For efficiency, I went straight to Squarespace to design on your project. Although your site appears to be functioning it’s only about 25% complete from a design perspective, so all the parts that look incomplete…it’s because they are.

Version one is all about the homepage and overall style, fonts, and personality. In version two we will get extra detailed and make sure each section is fit for perfection.

Because you’ve already provided feedback on functions I’ll address them here and make sure they are ready for version two.

    1. Yes, we absolutely are including that but it will be featured on each page specific to the information. Users don’t want to sort through reviews/sessions of other categories. Instead, we provided them that info directly on the page they are looking at for a strong testimonial effect. This section is only partially designed…more to come! Yay!

    2. Yes and YES!

    3. Yes, sorry. Section only 50% complete. More to come!

    4. All or most images will change. These are for example only

    5. Absolutely, this page hasn’t been designed yet.

    6. Fonts…ahhh yes, sadly Squarespace does not offer our brand font. I will take a closer look and see if there is a better-suited option to give us the personality we want.

    7. I will create color variations and see what you think of our different brand colors.

    8. If you have any additional features you would like to see on your site.. ex. video section, booking forms, social media sections, what to wear sections, client-specific pages, ex… let me know and I will make sure to include in your next version

  4. Oh, I see. That makes a lot more sense! Thanks for clarifying all of my questions.

I wanted to let you know that I’ve uploaded more photos to each of my PASS galleries so you will have a little more image content to work with.

    For question #8 above:

    a. I was thinking maybe of adding an Information page that has FAQ, including ‘what to wear.’ What do you think about that?

    b. I definitely want to link to all social media in whatever way you think is best (IG, Pinterest, and FB).

    c. I think client-specific pages would be a great idea, for example for sample timelines, etc for weddings! I’d love to explore this feature.

  5. Hi Emily! I have updated your site a bit this week. You can view it here: https://markbrandboutique.squarespace.com/

I loved all the extra ideas you had and I have implemented a “client portal” it can be accessed from the footer menu: https://markbrandboutique.squarespace.com/client-portal/

The only part of your website that is “work-in-progress” is the footer & the blog. These sections will get addressed further in the next round.

Please provide your feedback specifically on the following and any additional thoughts:

    – New brand color in “regal”
    – Overall design concept
    – Specific elements that you like and dislike

Also, if you could, please begin writing content for any missing sections. You can add the additional content to your existing worksheet here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13ZSJ1brGi8hSIgzB_Jla4M6Su0-mNZPQSebW662fnFc/edit?usp=sharing

  6. Hello, and Happy New Year!

The website is looking really nice, I’m loving the overall look and feel.

I like the “regal” color, but can’t decide if I’m sold on it. It is neutral and classic, which is great. Any thoughts on why you think this one is a good choice over the other options?

The client portal looks great so far! I am very excited about this. I’ve been trying to organize my thoughts and ideas for some of the content, so hopefully this coming weekend I can work on getting some of that together.

For specific elements I do like:

    – I like the home, about, and contact page layouts.

    – I like the “featured” section on the wedding page and the publication strip.

    – I like how the quotes from clients are sprinkled throughout the site.

    – I like how the galleries are laid out on the ‘portraits’ and ‘weddings and engagements’ pages in the FOOTER menu.

For specific elements I am not in love with:

    – On the ‘weddings’ and ‘portraits’ pages from the MAIN menu, I don’t think I like the way the images in the center are placed in a grid layout.

    – I don’t know how I feel about combining the engagement photos with the wedding photos all in one gallery on the ‘weddings’ page. Perhaps under the publications strip there could be two clickable galleries that take you to a slideshow of “wedding galleries” and “engagement galleries.”

*I wanted to let you know I will be going out of town from 1/11 – 1/20, so if I am slow responding to emails I apologize in advance. I probably won’t have my laptop with me, so won’t be able to do much in the way of working. Please let me know if you need anything from me before I leave town. Thanks so much!

    • Hi Emily, excellent questions.

      1. I selected the regal color because it is the darkest shade in the set and is a perfect contrast to all the white and airy gray we have used on the site. I also selected it because it compliments your photo editing style. The regal color is calming, soft yet bold and identifiable. It stands out without being too loud and it is found in the tones of your current work.

Although we are using it in the footer we can also include the other brand colors throughout the site.

      2. Glad you like the client portal. I love it too!!

      3. Grid galley, there a few different options to display this gallery. I have changed the options on both pages. Let me know if you like the way this looks better.

      3. Yay! have fun on vacation! We are doing excellent timing for your project so no worries. I will be finishing up with your brand templates in Canva this week and send you the proofs soon.

The only additional elements I will need from you is the wording content for any missing spaces throughout the site. Also, if you have any “preferred” images for any of the sections you can let me know and I will replace.

Our next step will be finalizing your site design and preparing for your “launch” woohooo! When is your ideal launch date?

  7. Elise,

Thank you for providing such quick feedback!

    1. Thank you for explaining the choice for regal, it makes total sense and I do think I want to keep that for the footer color now.

I do like the idea of at least playing around with using other colors throughout the site. 🙂

    2. I love the way you updated the galleries. Thank you for doing that!

    3. I will start working on filling in wording on the site, as well as specific photo requests. I will get that to you as soon as possible!

    4. As far as ideal launch date, I would like to get it done by mid March if possible, but only if we are ready. I do not want to rush things, so if you have an estimate you think would be more realistic based on our current pace, I am totally fine with being patient and taking more time to finalize and perfect everything.

Now that you mention the launch, should I be promoting this now, or is that something you will be working with me on. I am trying to think of ideas for giveaways, etc. I’m probably ahead of myself here, but just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks again!

    • March is totally attainable! We are doing great timing and will absolutely be ready.

You can begin thinking through some launch activities (i.e. social media, promos, contests, newsletters, ect.) Once you’ve planned out your ideas we will review them together in your launch consultation (in February).

I will provide you the brand kit that can be used during the launch (social media graphics, ect.) More details to come!!!! Stay tuned 🙂
